The Arizona Cardinals report to training camp on July 22 and begin the process of preparing for the regular season, forming the roster and determining starting jobs and roles on the team.
Leading up to the start of camp, we will take a look at every player on the offseason roster, their background, their contract, their play in 2025, questions they face and their roster outlook.
Here is cornerback Garrett Williams.
Williams enters his fourth NFL season and his fourth with the Cardinals. The Cardinals drafted him in the third round in 2023 out of Syracuse.
He missed the first half of his rookie season recovering from a torn ACL he suffered his final year of college and played the final nine games, starting six, and picking off a pass.
He developed into one of the best slot cornerbacks in 2024.
Last season, injuries were a problem again. He missed five games with a knee injury early in the season, came back and then tore his Achilles in Week 16, missing the final two games of the year. He played in and started 10 games. He had 46 total tackles, one tackles for loss, an interception, five pass breakups and a forced fumble.
Williams enters the final year of his four-year rookie contract worth more than $5.6 million. Because of his playing time over the last three seasons, he earned a proven performance salary escalator and is due to make nearly $3.7 million in salary. He counts more than $3.9 million against the salary cap.
He is eligible for a contract extension.
There are two main questions that Williams faces.
While originally, he was not expected to be back by Week 1, the Cardinals had good news. There is a chance he could be ready for the start of the season, although he will likely start training camp on PUP (physically unable to perform list).
If healthy, he is a lock to make the team and should be their starting slot cornerback. Sean Murphy-Bunting is working in his place currently.
If he isn't ready to start the season or to even play in the first four weeks of the year, the cornerback room is easier. He starts the year on PUP or injured reserve, and there is an extra roster spot for someone to make the team.
But if the team thinks he can be ready within the first four weeks and he comes off PUP during training camp, he will occupy a roster spot and make the position battle that much more difficult.
