Argentina's journey to defending its World Cup title continues.
Lionel Messi's next opponent?
Switzerland.
The two sides face off in the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday, July 11 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
Argentina had a controversial comeback win to beat Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16. Messi scored his eighth goal of the tournament, putting him alone at the top of the Golden Boot race. He also extended his record with 21 World Cup goals overall.
Switzerland went into penalty kicks to overcome Colombia after a scoreless round of 16 match. They were without top scorer Johan Manzambi, who was recovering from an undisclosed injury. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had three saves.
The two sides have met four times before. Argentina won three of the games with the fourth matchup ending in a draw. La Albiceleste won both World Cup matches, a 2-0 victory in 1966 and a 1-0 win in the round of 16 of the 2014 tournament.
Not saying Messi and Co. will repeat as champions, but after escaping against Egypt, the soccer gods are clearly in their favor.
Swiss coach Murat Yakin has a talented squad, but the reigning World Cup champions - led by the soccer G.O.A.T. - will earn a hard-fought win in a game that could be very competitive.
Argentina can't keep cutting it close if they face England or Spain later in the tournament, but Lionel Messi powers his side to at least one more win against a Switzerland squad who has a lot of grit.
