Antonio Conte wants to sign another Scottish midfielder for Napoli

Antonio Conte clearly dreams of an all-Scottish midfield at Napoli as he prepares plans for the summer transfer window.

The former Chelsea and Spurs boss brought two Scotland internationals to the club last summer, signing Scott McTominay from Manchester United and Billy Gilmour from Brighton.

McTominay has become a cult figure at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona with his impressive performances this season, scoring 12 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.

Although Gilmour has not reached the same heights as his compatriot, he has played 23 times in Serie A as the Partenopei close in on the Scudetto, which would be just the fourth league title in the club’s history.

Conte could have a trio of Scottish midfielders in his team next season if Napoli sign Lewis Ferguson from Bologna.

The Italian tactician has ‘set his sights’ on the 25-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window and could sign him on a loan deal with an obligation to buy, according to Sky Sport Switzerland.

The report claims that Conte and club sporting director Giovanni Manna have ‘maintained frequent contact’ with the player’s entourage to try and convince him of a move to Naples, which he finds ‘tempting’.

Ferguson joined Bologna from Aberdeen in 2022, but has struggled with injuries this season. He underwent surgery on a knee injury last year, which has restricted him to just 14 league appearances this season. He also pulled up in the warm-up prior to last month’s encounter with Napoli, incidentally, which kept him sidelined for a month.

Regardless, Conte remains ‘convinced’ of the central midfielder’s qualities. Ferguson impressed immediately upon his arrival in Italy, earning a new contract after his first season before being given the captaincy. He was also named the Serie A midfielder of the year for the 2023–24 season.

Ferguson captained Bologna as they reached their first Coppa Italia final in 51 years, in which they will face AC Milan next week. The Rossoblu are also chasing Champions League qualification for a second successive season as they sit one point behind fourth-placed Juventus in the table.
