The girls state tennis finals started with the Division 4 tournament on Wednesday morning, with Ann Arbor Greenhills being crowned champion at Greater Midland Tennis Center on Thursday afternoon.
Ann Arbor Greenhills was the top-ranked team in the division all season long and proved the rankings correct with a dominant performance over the course of the two-day tournament.
With 35 points, Ann Arbor Greenhills cleared the field by double-digit points. Grand Rapids Catholic Central was the closest contender with 24.
The doubles flights powered Ann Arbor Greenhills. Danica Rakic-Dennis and Lauren Ye won the No. 1 doubles flight without dropping a set, as did Aoife Tang and Linnea Bengston at No. 4 doubles, who beat Tessa Lindemann and Sienna Martinus out of Grand Rapids Catholic Central. Anya He and Alice Zhu knocked off top-seeded Sophia Augestine and Emma Scheffler from Allegan to win the No. 3 doubles flight. Ireland Dewey and Madison Cook made the No. 1 doubles final for Allegan, who finished third as a team with 18 points.
Jahan Soofi captured the No. 4 singles title for Ann Arbor Greenhills by defeating Olivia Boggs from Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett.
The No. 1 singles championship match featured Kennedy Price from Kalamazoo Christian and Grosse Pointe Woods Univeristy Liggett’s Sonya Jayakar. Jayakar defeated Price 6-4, 6-2.
Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett finished fourth with 16 points, one point ahead of Pontiac Notre Dame with 15.
Pontiac Notre Dame Prep was led by the pair of Vanessa Artinian and Regina Carpenese, who won the championship at No. 2 doubles. Artinian and Carpenese beat Jessica Lou and Alyssa Hong from Ann Arbor Greenhills, preventing an Ann Arbor Greenhills doubles flight sweep.
At No. 2 singles Hazel Morgan of Ann Arbor Greenhills fell in the final to Mary-Kate Ansley from Traverse City St. Francis. The No. 3 singles final saw Grand Rapids Catholic Central’s Naomi Tamae beat Faith Miller of Ann Arbor Greenhills 6-1 in the third set.
Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian finished with 14 points, Traverse City St. Francis 13 and Kalamazoo Christian 12. Lansing Catholic totaled 11 and Clarkston Everest Collegiate rounded out the top ten with 10 points.
The Division 1 tournament is next up, taking place Friday and Saturday. Divisions 2 and 3 will take the courts in Midland from June 3-6.
