The Los Angeles Angels got back on track as they hit the road tonight against the Cincinnati Reds, with the Angels riding a strong start from Jack Kochanowicz and a barrage of home runs from Zach Neto, Josh Lowe and Jorge Soler to a blowout 10-1 victory. The win prevented a potential losing streak after the Angels dropped the last two games of their recent homestead to the Atlanta Braves.

The Angels scored early and often in this one, getting single runs in the second and third innings then adding a pair in the fourth. The first run scored on a bases-loaded walk issued by Reds starter Chase Burnes, with Adam Frazier getting the RBI for drawing the walk. The next came on an infield hit by Yoan Moncada that drove in Jorge Soler, who is still playing while appealing his suspension after his brawl with Reynaldo Lopez against the Braves.

After that the power hitters showed up. Neto started to long-ball display with a two-run bomb to score Frazier and make it 4-0. The Reds finally got on the board in the fifth on a ground out by Friedl, but Josh Lowe quickly got that run back with another homer to make it 5-1.

While the Angels were scoring, Kochanowicz was cruising. He gave up just a single run and two hits in seven innings, and he threw an economical 95 pitches to get there, although he did struggle with four walks as 53 of those pitches were strikes.

The Angels keps scoring in the eighth as Mike Trout drew a bases-loaded walk off Reds reliever Sam Moll, and Soler put the cherry on top of the five-run eighth inning with a grand slam to make it 10-1.

New addition Mitch Farris came on in relief for Kochanowicz after being called up from Triple-A Salt Lake and tossing a scoreless inning against the Braves. Farris did get nicked for a solo home run by Elly De La Cruz, but that was the only damage the Reds did as the Angels coasted to the win and get their road trip off to a good start.

The home run show was certainly impressive, but the big news in this one was Kochanowicz, who upped his record to 2-0 and dropped his ERA to 3.24. His first start of the season against the Houston Astros was bad, but after that he threw 13 scoreless innings against the Seattle Mariners and the Reds before Cincinnati got their lone run off him tonight.

Having him become a reliable option would help solidify the rotation, and Kochanowciz’s next start will be Wednesday in the Bronx against the New York Yankees.
