The Los Angeles Angels placed right-handed starter Jack Kochanowicz on the injured list after Saturday’s loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The official reason as to why they placed him on the IL is right elbow inflammation. In a corresponding move, the Angels recalled left-hander Sam Aldegheri from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Kochanowicz had the worst start of his season on Saturday, allowing seven runs through just 0.1 innings pitched. The Angels took an early lead in the first inning, but Dodgers center fielder Andy Pages quickly erased it with a two-run homer. A flurry of hits and defensive errors forced Kochanowicz out in the first inning and gave the Dodgers a 9-1 lead by the end of the frame.

The right-hander had a promising start to the season, posting a 3.09 ERA through the month of April, but the wheels fell off in May, as he recorded four losses and allowed 25 earned runs in just 28.2 innings pitched. After his last start, his season ERA sits at 6.05—nearly double what it was just over a month ago.

When Did Sam Aldegheri Last Play for the Angels?

Aldegeheri last appeared for the Angels June 2 against the Rockies, where he pitched 5.1 shutout innings at home and struck out five. Despite his strong performance, though, the Angels opted to send him back down to Triple-A.

The left-hander has bounced between Triple-A and MLB all season, making three appearances for the Halos so far. He has a 2.45 ERA through three appearances, allowing just three runs through 11 innings pitched.

With Kochanowicz out of the rotation, Aldegheri could take over his spot, but could also come out of the bullpen if needed. Kochanowicz wouldn’t have to make another start until later in the week, so the Angels have plenty of time to choose a new starter for that slot if they see fit.

The Angels have other things to worry about first, though, as they’re looking to avoid a season sweep against the Los Angeles Dodgers in their final game against the other LA team on Sunday. The final game of that series comes Sunday at 1:10 p.m. PT, when Jose Soriano will look to salvage something for the Halos.
