Andre Dawson was elected to the Hall of Fame, while Bert Blyleven and Roberto Alomar fell just short of earning baseball's highest honor.

Dawson, nicknamed "The Hawk," received 420 of 539 votes in voting announced Wednesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, 15 more than the 75 percent necessary to gain election.

The eight-time All-Star, appearing on the ballot for the ninth time, had fallen 44 votes short last year.

Blyleven had 400 votes, up from 338 last year, and likely will get in, what with two more tries on the BBWAA ballot.

Alomar received 397 votes in his first appearance, and was followed by Jack Morris with 282.

Dawson, who won eight Gold Gloves and four Silver Slugger awards, had a 21-year career with the now-defunct Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins.

He will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on July 25 in Cooperstown, N.Y., along with manager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey, who were elected last mongth by the Hall's Veterans Committee.

Roberto Alomar should've made it on the first try. His resume as a second baseman is second to none.

Was thinking about this... How does Dawson get in, yet Blyleven continues to gert stiff-armed? They are both "compilers" aren't they? They never truly dominated for any length of time... Dawson really only had one great year when he was with the Cubs... and he has none of the magic thresholds... not 500 hrs, not 3000 hits, not a .300 BA and he is total compiler in RBI's with only four 100 RBI seasons! (mcGriff had 8; Delgado had like 9 in a row)...

Meanwhile, Blyleven is a top 5 guy in history in K's, has 60 shutouts (9th all time) and 287 wins -- his ERA is virtually the same as guys like Feller, Hunter, Carlton and Sutton ... okay argue only one 20 game season, but the shutouts and K's are at the very top elite of the list in history along with having a good enough ERA to match up against other HOF'ers. Blyleven clearly did not play with great teams for any period of time which certainly impacted his win percentage... early 70's twins were not a good team and he was banging out mid-2's in ERA year after year and only winning 16-18 games...

Totally agree on Blyleven, and he gets less support every year.

I believe Dawson's highest spot on any of the career compiling lists is in Outs Made. Of course, with a career .320 OBP you would expect that.

Depends on how much sucking up the media CY does for the rest of his career.

The Baseball HOF is a complete sham.

It is a sham, but c'mon man... It would require a degree of "sucking up" from Young that would rival, if not surpass Jenna Jamison levels... :D
