The Los Angeles Rams boast an array of high-profile stars, from Matthew Stafford and Puka Nacua to Kyren Williams, all playing critical roles in the team's quest to return to the Super Bowl. However, Yahoo Sports' Nate Tice believes a breakout contributor from the 2025 roster will once again emerge as a vital X-factor for the 2026 season: tight end Colby Parkinson.

While much of the modern NFL discourse focuses on pure pass-catching athleticism at the position, Tice emphasizes that Parkinson’s true value stems from his rare utility as an elite, in-line blocker. Parkinson acts as the physical anchor that makes head coach Sean McVay's heavy 13 personnel (three tight end) packages function at a dominant level.

This is what McVay always strives to do with his offense: make defenses constantly have to prepare for multiple plays that are based out of the same, or similar, looks and personnel groupings. He makes rock, paper, and scissors all dangerous. And Parkinson is the player who epitomizes that triple-threat aspect of the Rams offense.

Parkinson's physical presence at the point of attack allows the Rams to find critical offensive balance. Tice points to advanced metrics to demonstrate this impact: on early downs outside of two-minute and garbage-time situations, the Rams' designed run rate sits at a bottom-tier 42.8% when Parkinson is off the field. With him on the field, it jumps to a league-average 47.8%.

Because opposing defenses are forced to honor the threat of a legitimate run look when Parkinson is aligned in the "Y" position, the team's play-action concepts become significantly more effective. Under those same early-down constraints, the Rams' play-action rate climbs from an already high 24.1% without Parkinson to a league-leading 30.8% when he is deployed.

This multi-faceted skill set translates directly into a more efficient and explosive unit overall. According to data cited by Tice, the Rams' explosive play rate climbs from 10.4% (14th in the NFL) without Parkinson to 14.5% with him on the field—a metric that would comfortably lead the league. Ultimately, while athletic targets like 2025 second-round pick Terrance Ferguson push defenses vertically, it is Parkinson’s reliability as an in-line anchor that allows the Rams' diverse offensive menu to function at an elite level.

And the numbers bore out in raw production, too. Parkinson finished with a franchise-best eight receiving touchdowns for a tight end. On top of that, Parkinson had 43 receptions for 408 yards to go with his eight touchdowns — all of which are career-bests.

On an offense with some of the NFL's best stars, the Rams may once again lean into a player who was critical in their rise in 2025.
