Los Angeles has a long history of honoring sports heroes through murals. Add Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu to the list.

Gustavo Zermeño Jr. shared to social media his larger-than-life depiction of the figure skater, alongside the fitting soundtrack of Kanye West’s “Champion.”

The artwork is located at 15532 Crenshaw Blvd. in Gardena, the artist said.

From Retired to Olympic Hero

Liu has captured the country’s attention as she became the first American woman to win the gold medal in figure skating since Sarah Hughes in 2002.

She’s also the first American woman to medal at all since Sasha Cohen’s silver medal in 2006.

Adding to the momentous nature of Liu’s achievement is her career path, which seemed derailed with her retirement in 2022.

After a few years away from figure skating — including enrolling at UCLA — the now 20-year-old Liu has reemerged as a unique force, eschewing some of the traditional hallmarks of the sport.

As detailed by Sally Jenkins of The Atlantic, Liu sports a unique haircut and an individualistic streak that runs contrary to the tough coaching typical of figure skating.

“No one tells me what to do,” she explained.

Love it or hate it, it’s hard to argue with that attitude. After all, it’s taken Liu to the pinnacle of the sport.
