With just nine days to go before the 2024 NFL draft, the Cowboys have no shortage of directions they could go in addressing several key positions on the football field.
And their menu of options may have just increased by one.
Three-time All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey is seeking a trade out of Miami, and the Dolphins have agreed to explore a deal. That news comes courtesy of NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
The 30-year-old Ramsey is a seven-time Pro Bowler and a former first-round draft pick with 24 career interceptions and 534 tackles on his résumé, which spans nine seasons and three teams. Now his career could finally take him to Dallas, a team in genuine need of cornerback help and a club Ramsey has been linked to before.
Coming out of Florida State in the 2016 draft, Ramsey says he had been told by the Cowboys- his favorite team as a child- that he would be their pick with the No. 4 selection that year. But when Dallas turned in their card, the name written on it was Ezekiel Elliott's. Ramsey was taken with the next pick, by Jacksonville.
After finishing as runner-up for Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2016, his first All-Pro honors the next season, and Pro Bowl nods in 2017 and 2018, Ramsey expected a massive extension from the Jaguars going into his fourth season. Instead, he got the fifth-year option and was demanding a trade by mid-September. The Cowboys were frequently mentioned as possible suitors, but no real interest ever materialized, partially because the cost would have likely been too high. Ramsey was shipped off to the Rams in October.
Ramsey stayed with Los Angeles for three and a half years, racking up another three Pro Bowl trips, two more All-Pro accolades, and a Super Bowl ring.
Ramsey was traded again in the 2023 offseason, this time to Miami. At the time, he was ranked the third-best cornerback in the game. He missed the start of that year with a meniscus injury but by 2024 had earned a three-year, $72,3 million contract extension that made him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
He played in all 17 games last season, finishing with two interceptions and a ranking in the top 10 of PFF's cornerback grades.
Now he wants out, and like disgruntled Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, he may be elsewhere soon.
Ramsey has a guaranteed salary of $25.1 million in 2025. A team that takes him on will see a cap hit of about $16.6 million.
Dallas is currently sitting on $37.7 million of cap space after several big bookkeeping moves this offseason. They have the financial capacity to make this kind of move. And they have ten overall picks in the upcoming draft. One has to believe that, if motivated to do so, Jerry and Stephen Jones could put together a package that puts a star on the helmet of either Ramsey or Hill.
Or both.
If the Cowboys are as close as they believe to championship contention, Ramsey and Hill- even at 30 and 31, respectively- would be clear and immediate upgrades to whatever rookie prospects the team thinks they can find in the draft.
The Cowboys are thin at corner, having just lost Jourdan Lewis in free agency and also waiting on Trevon Diggs to fully rehab from January knee surgery. DaRon Bland is in a contract year, second-year man Caelen Carson is still learning the ropes, and Kaiir Elam has much to prove as a reclamation project acquired via trade last month.
Also worth noting, Ramsey's agent is David Mulugheta, the same man who represents Cowboys edge rusher Micah Parsons. Parsons is currently seeking a contract extension of his own, one that could easily make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made headlines recently by reportedly working through the general parameters of a new deal directly with Parsons... and then claiming to not know who Parsons's agent is.
It might be a good time to get re-acquainted, Jerry. Ramsey and the Cowboys have tapdanced around each other a few times already. He's still a top talent, and the team needs the help. There's still a chance to make him a Cowboy.

The #Dolphins and seven-time Pro Bowl CB Jalen Ramsey are mutually set to explore trade options and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he played elsewhere in 2025, per me and @TomPelissero.
