Alexa Spallina received the ACC Freshman of the Year award after a massive first season with the Clemson lacrosse team, giving Clemson one of the conference’s biggest individual honors.
Spallina, a Mount Sinai, N.Y. native, started all 19 games for Clemson and quickly became one of the most important assets of the Tigers’ offense. She finished the season with 37 goals, 67 assists and 104 total points, which is a ridiculous stat line for any player, let alone a freshman in the ACC. She was not just a scorer or just a feeder either. Clemson put the ball in her stick constantly, and she gave the offense someone who could create her own look, pull defenders toward her, and set up teammates when the defense collapsed.
Her season highs show how many different ways she could take over a game. Spallina scored six goals against Furman, handed out 10 assists against Davidson, and opened her college career with seven points against Vanderbilt. She also had seven assists against California and produced big games against Virginia Tech, Wofford, Mercer, and Duke.
Spallina came to Clemson as Inside Lacrosse’s No. 1 ranked recruit, a three-time USA Lacrosse All-American, a two-time All-Long Island selection, a three-time All-Suffolk County pick and the MVP of the New Balance All-American Tournament. She was also listed as the second No. 1 ranked recruit to sign with Clemson Athletics, joining Trevor Lawrence in that category, which says plenty about the level of recruiting win this was for the Tigers.
This award is bigger than just a freshman having a nice year. Clemson is still a young lacrosse program compared to some of the established powers in the ACC, but landing a player like Spallina and watching her become one of the league’s top young stars right away changes how the program is viewed.
Spallina’s freshman season gave Clemson production now and a major reason to be excited about what comes next. The Tigers may have one of the best individual careers in program history starting to unfold right in front of them.
