Alabama women's basketball is gearing up to take on Maryland in the Women's NCAA Tournament.
The Crimson Tide (24-8) advanced to the second round after a 81-67 win over No. 12 seed Green Bay in the first game of the College Park Regional on Saturday at the Xfinity Center. Alabama was led by 23 points from Aaliyah Nye and 22 from Zaay Green.
No. 4 seed Maryland (24-7) took down Norfolk State 82-69 on Saturday to advance. They were led by Sarah Te-Biasu with 22 points and Kaylene Smikle with 21 points.
The winner will advance to the Sweet 16 and Birmingham which will kick off next Friday, March 28.
Maxwell Donaldson, The Tuscaloosa News: Alabama 80, Maryland 75 — Both of the top seeds found themselves in a battle, with Maryland trailing in their NCAA Tournament opener at the half but found ways to win. Alabama had to do so with its star Sarah Ashlee Barker struggling shooting.
Both teams have been tested, coming from two of the top conferences in the sport but both struggled against the top of their respective conferences and Maryland fell to Texas in non-conference play. The Terps are an experienced bunch going to the Sweet 16, twice, and Elite Eight the last three seasons while Alabama hasn't made it out of the first weekend.
The Terps hit at 46.5 % from the field but struggle from deep shooting just 35.9%, giving Alabama an advantage it should take advantage of from 3-point range. If Alabama can hit at the rate it has most of the season and not only get the stops it made on Saturday, but score after them, Maryland will have a tough time slowing down this Crimson Tide offense.
The Crimson Tide's matchup with the Terrapins will be on Monday with a time and TV designation to be announced later.
