The Tampa Bay Rays have emerged as one of MLB‘s biggest success stories in 2026. Not only do they sit atop the AL East, but they also own the best record in the American League, fending off strong challenges from both the New York Yankees and the surging Boston Red Sox. With the trade deadline quickly approaching, the Rays appear ready to make a move to strengthen an already impressive roster.
According to a recent report from UnderDogMLB via Robert Murray, Tampa Bay has shown interest in two impact players: Los Angeles Angels shortstop Zach Neto and New York Mets starting pitcher Freddy Peralta. Both players would address clear needs for the Rays as they look to solidify themselves as World Series contenders.

One of Tampa Bay’s biggest weaknesses this season has been its lack of offensive production from the shortstop position.
Acquiring Neto would immediately upgrade the lineup while also giving the Rays a player they could build around beyond this season. One of the biggest reasons the fit makes sense is his years of remaining team control, something Tampa Bay has consistently prioritized when making trades.
The Rays have built sustained success by targeting players who can contribute for multiple seasons rather than making expensive additions, making Neto an ideal candidate if the Angels are willing to listen to offers.

Adding another proven starting pitcher also appears to be high on Tampa Bay’s deadline wish list.
Peralta would give the Rays another experienced arm capable of pitching meaningful innings during the stretch run and into the postseason. While Tampa Bay already has one of the better pitching staffs in baseball, another quality starter would provide valuable depth as workloads increase down the stretch.
Unlike Neto, Peralta is in the final year of his contract. That actually makes him an appealing target for the Rays, who have traditionally avoided long-term financial commitments. Acquiring him as a rental would allow Tampa Bay to strengthen its rotation without taking on large future payroll obligations.
