Ailing Bremen continue to back coach Steffen

Werder Bremen are sticking with coach Horst Steffen even though they languish close to the Bundesliga danger zone in a run of nine games without victory.

Bremen managing director for professional football Clemens Fritz said after Tuesday's 2-0 home defeat against Hoffenheim that he can see how Steffen "works with the team. I see a team that gets things passed on by the coach.

"I can feel his energy, his positive attitude," Fritz said.

Bremen are three points above the danger zone in 15th place, have not won in nine matches and not scored a goal in five or last six games.

Steffen said he appreciates the backing from former Bremen captain Fritz who is also under fire from fans over the poor showings.

"It's not something to be taken for granted. But it's also a nice confirmation," Steffen said, adding he is "happy to pass on that trust to the players."

Bremen next host fellow strugglers Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, and Steffen remains defiant.

"I believe that the team is capable of winning games. And we are working to make that happen soon," Steffen said.
