The E.O. Smith boys basketball team has won almost as many games already this season as it did last year and the year before.

The Panthers are 7-2 after back-to-back 9-11 regular seasons the last two years, which were the first two years of coach Jeff Belanger’s tenure at the school.

“We’re still pretty young; we have four sophomores in our eight-man rotation and a junior who’s a first-year varsity player who starts,” said Belanger, who coached at Windham Tech for 29 years. “We’re still pretty green but we’re getting better and better each game.”

Cam Belanger (Jeff’s son), Cam Mazerolle and Joey Baker are all seniors and three year varsity players – “They’re helping the younger kids come along,” Belanger said.

“We’re veteran enough in the important spots.”

Mazerolle leads the team in scoring (16 ppg) and Belanger and Christian Gaskin (13 ppg) are also offensive contributors. Last year, Baker was one of the leading scorers but his role has turned into more of a defensive specialist this season.

E.O. Smith, which has won four straight games, will play Farmington Tuesday.
