So how do the New Orleans Saints move in the wake of Derek Carr's serious shoulder injury? Well, as far as they're concerned, their strategy doesn't really change. The Saints were already aware of Carr's sore throwing shoulder, but were keeping it under wraps with the 2025 NFL draft coming into view. So this may not change their approach too drastically. If they were already planning to pick a quarterback in the first round, at ninth overall, they could still do that. If they weren't planning to go that route, news of Carr's injury going public won't pressure them to do so anyway.
ESPN's Adam Schefter shared some insight to the Saints' thinking during a Monday TV appearance on NFL Live, responding to host Dan Orlovsky's comparison of "liking" a prospect versus "loving" them.
"Well Dan, let me say this," Schefter began, " When you are drafting a quarterback, you are marrying him. And you don't marry a partner that you like, you marry a partner that you love."
Schefter pointed to two first-round quarterbacks in last year's draft, saying that while the Denver Broncos loved Bo Nix, the Minnesota Vikings didn't feel as strongly about J.J. McCarthy; their ideal QB would have been Drake Maye, but they settled for the next-best thing. And that could be the kind of situation the Saints are stepping into.
Schefter continued: "I think the draft is all about where you attach the value. I don't know where the Saints have grades on Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough. But if they feel like they can get one of them in the back end of the first round, in the second round, maybe they feel like that's the best thing they can do."
Schefter then mentioned a thought from another executive around the NFL, who agreed the Saints wouldn't want to hear it anyway -- why not throw in the towel and tank the 2025 season, in hopes that Arch Manning turns pro in 2026? That just isn't in their DNA. 68-year old general manager Mickey Loomis has always pushed the envelope to try and compete for a playoff berth, and he isn't going to stop now. So long as he's calling the shots in New Orleans, the Saints are not going to go all-in on a rebuild, with or without Derek Carr. We can argue about whether or not that's the correct approach, but what's indisputable is how the Saints will feel about it.
