Mason Graham has been an extremely popular pick for the Jacksonville Jaguars in mock drafts, and understandably so. However, one league executive would tell Adam Schefter that when it comes to who the Jaguars could take at fifth overall, they are a "wild card."
Perhaps Graham isn't the slam dunk that he appears to be. So, then who might be in play for the Jaguars?
Read into this what you will, it very could be nothing, but following that comment about the Jaguars being a "wild card," Schefter didn't highlight Will Campbell or Ashton Jeanty, or Tyler Warren, or Armand Membou. He discussed Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan.
"Jaguars coach Liam Coen has long had a soft spot for wide receivers in the draft, and the top-rated wideout in this class, Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan, has drawn comparisons to ... the Bucs' Mike Evans," wrote Schefter.
"Coen, who coached Evans last year, knows how valuable a player like that can be to an offense. Some have questions McMillan's passion for football, but others suggest he is misunderstood and that, when he's on a football field, 'he's an absolute baller.'"
Beyond Travis Hunter, McMillan is widely considered the top receiver prospect in this year's NFL draft, although value-wise, taking him at pick No. 5 could be considered a bit rich.
Over the last two seasons, McMillan has totaled a whopping 260 targets during that span. He's gone on to haul in 67% of those passes and an impressive 15.6 yards per catch with 18 touchdowns, according to PFF.
Pairing McMillan and Brian Thomas Jr. would give Liam Coen two wide receivers who provide interchangeability. He can move them around the formation as needed and have each attack different levels of the field, allowing Coen to go after defenses in a variety of ways, which of course, can be difficult to defend.
Wide receiver is very much a position the Jaguars need to add to, not only for depth, but in a passing game where spreading the ball around will be important, as Coen detailed recently, having reliable options at the WR2 and WR3 roles will help take some of the burden off of Thomas.
Parker Washington and Dyami Brown could certainly handle those responsibilities, but I don't know that's a given either, not to mention that the presence of either player on the roster shouldn't stop the Jaguars from looking to upgrade that room behind Thomas, which McMillan could provide.
The need is there, McMillan's fit within Coen's offense makes sense, but is pick No. 5 the right place to make this selection? Perhaps attempting to trade down and then make this pick would be the prudent move for the Jaguars.
