Abner Uribe is apologizing for the controversial celebration he directed toward the St. Louis Cardinals' dugout on Tuesday. But he's not apologizing to the Cardinals.
The right-handed pitcher banged his chest and did a "Crotch Chop" celebration after striking out Alec Burleson to close the top of the eighth inning. It prompted a raucous reaction from the Brewers faithful and criticism from his manager.
After the 6-0 win, Uribe expressed remorse to the Brewers while justifying his conduct to some degree.
"I understand that that's unacceptable to go out there and react in a way like that," Uribe said, per a translator. "But at the same time, I don't think it's professional for their manager [Oliver Marmol] to be making signs towards our dugout that he's going to be hitting guys. There was an event that occurred during the practice today too, and I don't think that was right, so I have my teammates' back always."
Uribe went on to claim that the day before, Marmol made those signs when Christian Yelich and William Contreras went to bat. He didn't specify about the practice event.
"I don't think it's very professional for them to be making gestures like that, and I don't think it's right for any of my guys to be going out there with any sort of fear in their heads that we may be getting thrown at or they can't play the game that they want to be able to play," Uribe said. "So I want to make sure it's also clear that my teammates in here know that I have their back and I'm on their side."
Mission accomplished, Abner.
