As training camp approaches for the Los Angeles Rams, all anyone is talking about is Aaron Donald’s future. The former All-Pro defensive tackle is considering a return to football, which would end his two-year retirement in order to chase another Super Bowl ring.
There’s no clear timeline for a decision to be made, and it could even spill into the regular season, but the Rams aren’t going to rush or push him. Donald hasn’t spoken publicly about his plans, only telling Pat McAfee and Jordan Schultz last month that he’s considering a comeback.
More recently, he and Chris Simms of NBC Sports exchanged texts about what he plans to do. Donald told Simms that he “honestly” doesn’t know whether he’s going to come back or not.
“I plain-out asked, I said, ‘What do you think? You going to give it a shot?’ Simms asked Donald a few days ago. “And I don’t think he’ll have any problem with me sharing this. He said, ‘Honestly, I don’t know yet.’ He just doesn’t know yet.”
Simms says that because Donald isn’t fully committed yet, he believes the Rams legend should stay retired.
“I feel like if you were really that hungry and ready to do it and your body was feeling good and we’re getting close here to training camp, this would be the time he’d be like, ‘I’m ready. I want to go back. I’m ready to go,’” Simms added.
Donald recently worked out at the Rams’ facility, going through drills and a full workout on the practice field in Woodland Hills. He’s testing his body out to see whether it’s ready for the grind of a season, which is different than simply working out in the gym every day.
Sean McVay will certainly be asked about Donald right away in camp, though he probably won’t reveal anything until Donald himself is ready to.
