The Astros were swept by the Orioles in a disappointing series. With some of their best pitchers taking the mound throughout the series, the Astros still could not get it done.
So, what went wrong?
Game One
The first game of the series Friday night was a competitive one, but once again the bullpen let the game slip away. While Lambert did a solid job limiting runs, King didn't deliver in the same way. In the eighth inning, things started to unravel for the Astros. Adley Rutschman led off with a ground-rule double off Bryan King, and Taylor Ward followed with a two-run homer to give the Orioles a 3-2 lead. King fell to 2-3 on the season.
Game Two
Arrighetti had a great start to the game. He walked a couple in the third, but a couple of pop-ups kept the game scoreless for Arrighetti, until the fourth inning, when he gave up one run, the only run he gave up before AJ Blubaugh took over in the 6th. The Astros tied it up when Nick Allen bunted in the 7th. Hader stepped in in the 9th and didn't give up a run, keeping the game tied. The Orioles scored a run in the 10th and the Astros followed up with a tying run, but could not get the winning run, even with the bases loaded in the 11th. The Orioles sealed the deal with two more runs, and the Astros lost 4-2.
Game Three
Their lineup was lacking, missing Walker and Peña. Hunter Brown gave up a run in the first, giving Baltimore the lead early on. Díaz challenged and got a call overturned, which was a huge overturn for Houston, and they tagged a runner out, getting the Orioles' staff fired up, but it was a solid play and challenge by the Astros all the way around. Overall, it was not Hunter Brown's best performance, and he allowed four runs on three hits over just 4 2/3 innings, issuing a career-high six walks and hitting two batters. The Astros were swept by the Orioles, with the final game ending 5-2.
The Astros are now over 100 games into this season with a losing record for the first time since 2014, and a four-game losing streak is not making anything look better. The Astros kick off their series against the Marlins Monday night as they continue their homestand, and are in desperate need of a win to turn this season around.
