The Washington Commanders had a treacherous 2025 season. With injuries, questionable play-calling, and an overall negative vibe, the Commanders could not overcome and win more than five games. So, GM Adam Peters set out to make some changes during free agency. On paper, the moves look like an improvement, but are they?

Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame recently gave each NFL team a reason to hope and a reason to mope during the offseason. Here's his take on the Commanders:

Hope: Washington did a terrific job in free agency, adding Odafe Oweh, Leo Chenal and others to buttress its defense. With Jayden Daniels hopefully healthy this season, the Commanders should bounce back.

Mope: The defense ranked last in 2025, so even improvement doesn’t necessarily mean good. As for the offense, a healthy Daniels makes everything work, but the unit needs more than just Terry McLaurin to threaten opponents.

With the 2026 NFL Draft less than a month away from starting, Peters still has some work to do. He will address more defense in the draft, and it's possible he drafts an offensive skill player, but the Commanders only have six draft picks in 2026, and are without picks in the second and fourth rounds. It's likely that Peters will have to continue to monitor the remaining free agents as well, or come up with a trade that points the team in the right direction.

At this stage, we don't know how much of an improvement the defense will have with the new signings, but in a lot of ways, that part is largely tended to. The Commanders desperately need someone to take attention away from Terry McLaurin on offense, though, and that has to be a priority regardless of how Peters handles it.
