Here’s a fun idea: rank all of Duke’s five-star prospects since 2010. That’s nearly 50 players (it’s actually 47), and the lowest-rated one on the list is an NBA All-Star.
On the other hand, several are more or less forgotten. We had to think for a minute about Frank Jackson, and while we liked Semi Ojeleye a lot, he left after his sophomore year.
We had high hopes for Derryck Thornton, but we hadn’t thought about him in forever. Same for Rasheed Sulaimon, who is the only player ever dismissed by Mike Krzyzewski.
Everyone is going to have different players they think more or less of than this list, but one interesting point is the top ten, in countdown order:
- Tyus Jones
- Jayson Tatum
- Vernon Carey
- RJ Barrett
- Paolo Banchero
- Jahlil Okafor
- Marvin Bagley
- Cameron Boozer
- Zion Williamson
- Cooper Flagg
Most people would keep the top three as they are, even if you might shuffle the order. For our part, we’d move Jones up, certainly ahead of Barrett, because he was a huge key to the 2015 national championship.
But then where do you put Barrett?
It’s not a bad problem to have when you look at other schools, many of which haven’t gotten many five-stars in that span.
