The July 4th holiday means that there is now less than a month away for all NFL clubs. In fact, 24 of the 32 teams will report to camp in less than three weeks time. OTAs have wrapped, and players and front office executives are likely spread out all over the globe getting their vacations on before things turn serious yet again. 90-man rosters are filled, following some churn after the completion of the spring league.
This also means many veterans are beginning to realize they may be out of a job this coming season. It's only a small handful of vets who are remaining free agents by choice, not wanting to work over the hot summer months. The rest are waiting on others' failures or injuries to open up a chance for them. The Dallas Cowboys, who start training camp on July 28, have nine unsigned free agents who were with them in 2025 spread across the multiple categories, a list that includes three full-time starters.
Safety Donovan Wilson and linebacker Kenneth Murray are probably the poster children for 2025's inept defense. Murray was a failed trade acquisition who played exactly how he had in his previous stops around the league. He started 16 of 17 games, and made some of the worst decisions fans have seen when it came to identifying proper plans of attacking the ball carrier.
Wilson was a bit different in that he had shown talent as a box safety in the past, but seemed to really struggle with the (lack of) direction under DC Matt Eberflus. The seventh-year veteran from Texas A&M had his lowest PFF grades, by far, of his career. One would think another club would know his work from before and give him a shot, but that hasn't occurred yet.
Perhaps the biggest surprise player still on the market is edge Jadeveon Clowney. Clowney joined Dallas midseason and subsequently led the club in sacks with 8.5, as he caught fire down the stretch of the season. There's certainly still a place in the league for the 33-year old mercenary, who may be choosing not to accept an offer before identifying where he can best be served in the pursuit of a playoff appearance.
In addition to these three, the following free agents ended the season on the Cowboys' roster.
