Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe set a new career high in scoring on Thursday and joined Hall of Famer Allen Iverson in the history books afterward.
Edgecombe produced a game-high 38 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds and two steals in a 139-118 victory over the Sacramento Kings. He finished by shooting 16-of-28 from the field, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range, and was a plus-44 in 39 minutes.
The third overall pick became the fourth rookie in franchise history to tally at least 30 points and 10 assists in a game, joining Iverson, Ben Simmons and Jared McCain. He is the second rookie to reach that stat line this season (Derik Queen).
"He obviously started really fast, so that was right off the bat," Sixers coach Nick Nurse said of Edgecombe. "He came out, kind of getting to his spots and bolting up, and he seemed really confident of just continuing to do that all night."
Edgecombe is averaging 15.6 points, 5.6 rebounds, four assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 34.6% from 3-point range in 63 appearances. He is third in rookie scoring and is one of six first-year players with multiple 30-point games (2).
The 20-year-old has emerged as a key contributor for Nurse, leading the league in loose-balls recovered (69) and ranking ninth among rookies in contested shots (277). He is also one of three rookies to score at least 20 points in four straight games this season.
Edgecombe has elevated his play of late, with the Sixers down Joel Embiid (oblique), Paul George (suspension), Tyrese Maxey (finger) and Kelly Oubre Jr. (elbow). He is showcasing himself at a high level and helping the team win in the process.
