It's usually that time of year when we get the same U.S. Open video ahead of the golf major: Golfers showing how deep the rough is ahead of the biggest, most torturous test for the sport's best. But not this time. In 2026, at Shinnecock Hills, the wind might be the biggest factor.
Yes, wind. Shinnecock Hills is on Long Island in New York -- full disclosure, I've been out there and can confirm the wind is a thing -- and the wind on Monday was HOWLING. Want proof? We've got it. There were a lot of videos shot and posted on Monday as the players practiced, and some noted the wind was going to be a problem later in the week if it was like that.
Here are some videos to take in:
Yikes. The lack of a hat tells you something, too.
Let's assume the greens are hard, too. OUCH!
Per the USGA:

Matt Fitzpatrick talked about the wind at Shinnecock Hills
Matt Fitzpatrick on dealing with the wind at Shinnecock:
"You've got to be able to have a lot of shots in your armory, really. I feel like it's a great golf course for that... It allows for shot making. I think that's what makes it a great test overall."pic.twitter.com/EZOJI9vxZe

The wind might be a factor on putts

What's the weather forecast for the 2026 US Open?
Per the USGA:
"Wednesday is not looking too bad despite there being a meager chance for some raindrops, then the wind reaches its peak Thursday with gusts surpassing 30 mph as the wind takes center stage through the weekend."
