The newest member of the Detroit Lions is Ohio State defensive tackle Tyliek Williams, the 28th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. There's plenty of work out there on his scouting report and what he'll bring to the Lions, but let's do a quick introduction on the fresh addition to the team. Here are five things to know about Tyliek Williams, with some help from Dane Brugler's "The Beast".
Williams began his football life at the age of just five years old, playing pee wee football. He actually started out as a quarterback and then played some running back. He played on the defensive line in high school and never looked back.
Williams was an excellent multi-sport athlete in high school at Stonewall Jackson High (now known as Unity Reed High) in Manassas, VA. He was his district's defensive player of the year as a sophomore and was a first-team all-state selection as a junior. He did not play his senior season. Reason being, the pandemic pushed his senior season to the spring and Williams had graduated early.
Williams was also a very good track athlete and set the school record in the shot put.
When he enrolled at Ohio State, he was about 360 pounds. He is down about 30 pounds, weighing in at 329 pounds at his Pro Day, a good weight for him and a credit to the work he put in to lose the weight and stay in good shape. That helped him run a solid 1.74 10-yard split at his Pro Day.
Eight tackles for a loss in 2024 and ten tackles for a loss in 2023. Not too shabby for a defensive tackle. He also totaled 100 tackles over the last two seasons.
Williams was named at least an Honorable Mention All-Big Ten all four years at Ohio State. He was Honorable Mention in 2021 and 2022, Second Team in 2023 (also Second Team All-American) and Third Team in 2024. He was a steady producer all throughout his career, culminating in a national championship in 2024.
