Following three straight days of full pads, the Denver Broncos had a lighter practice on Thursday, Day 6 of training camp. Among the players working on a side field was wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who was given veteran rest days on Tuesday and Wednesday. Denver coach Sean Payton was asked about Sutton's status following Thursday's session.

"Rest," Payton said. "He got some walk-through. Tomorrow, he'll be back. Just our protocol." Sutton also spoke after practice and confirmed that he's healthy. The team wants to keep him fresh for a long season that they want to last into February.

Sutton, who will turn 31 in October, has drawn 259 targets through quarterback Bo Nix's first two seasons in the NFL. Sutton hasn't had that level of workload since drawing 208 targets through his first two seasons (2018-2019).

Here are five other quick takeaways from Thursday's session.

5 takeaways from Broncos training camp Day 6

1. Broncos injury report: Denver WR Jaylen Waddle (muscle tightness), OLB Nik Bonitto (undisclosed), C Luke Wattenberg (undisclosed), CB Jaden Robinson (undisclosed) and OLB Dasan McCullough (undisclosed) all worked on a side field for recovering players. Meanwhile, tight endCaleb Lohner (knee) remains sidelined. Lohner's chances of making the 53-man roster are probably decreasing with every practice he misses.

2. Broncos rookie TE Justin Joly coming along: Joly, like most rookie tight ends, could use more refinement as a blocker. But he has big upside as a receiver, and the early reviews have been positive. “Yes, he’s coming," Payton said after Wednesday's practice. "It’s a big jump for all those young tight ends. He’s certainly someone we feel like is better with ball in hand. He’s pretty powerful. So there’s a lot of developmental still for his game, but this is one you want to see this accelerated period. I think a week from now, I’m anxious to get the same question just to see where he’s at, but he’s doing well.” Joly will get his first NFL game action in the team's preseason opener next week, and we'll then get a better idea of his current blocking ability.

3. RJ Harvey is a real threat out of the backfield: Harvey, who hauled in 47 receptions for 356 yards and five scores last fall, continues making plays in the passing game. Earlier this week, Payton recalled one of Harvey's best receiving moments from his rookie season. “I would say if you just measured his first year, he had a bigger impact in the passing game with some of the routes he was running than maybe in the run game because of the rotation," Payton said. "He has some good stuff on tape already as a rookie, so I’m encouraged because he has some natural hands. I think, you recall the play at Kansas City, it was a scramble and he was in the end zone. He kind of slid one way and slid back and just caught like a broken play. For a rookie, it was a pretty instinctive play, and you would’ve guessed it would’ve been a receiver. He happened to be in the back of the end zone. So he’s quiet, but he’s really smart.” Harvey's receiving stock will be of note to fantasy football managers who play in point-per-reception (PPR) leagues.

4. Jonah Coleman has been a pleasant surprise: Harvey isn't the only Denver running back who has been praised by Payton. When asked after Wednesday's practice if there's been a pleasant surprise at training camp, Payton name-dropped fourth-round draft pick Jonah Coleman. “Fair question," Payton said. "I think the young runner, you don’t feel a rookie with Jonah. He’s playing." Coleman is competing with Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie for the RB3 job behind J.K. Dobbins and Harvey. It sounds like he's off to a strong start.

5. Sean Payton's "really pleased" with Pat Bryant: Payton has insisted that the Broncos do not have a traditional WR1-WR2-WR3 rotation, but for fantasy football managers who like a clean depth chart, Bryant seems to be the clear favorite for an unofficial WR3 role. Payton was full of praise for the second-year receiver after Wednesday's practice. “[I’m] really pleased with how he’s doing," Payton said. "He’s just one of those congested ball catchers. ... He’s extremely smart. He’s doing really well.” Bryant's stock certainly seems to be trending up.

Denver's scheduled to practice again on Friday and Saturday before a day off on Sunday. The team will have three days of practice next week ahead of their preseason opener on the road against the Atlanta Falcons on Aug. 14.
