Denver Broncos veterans reported for training camp on Tuesday, and star cornerback Pat Surtain immediately fielded questions about the club contending for a Super Bowl this season.
“Our expectations are pretty high, but we are just going to take it week-by-week," Surtain said. "Obviously, that’s the main goal, but it starts right here in training camp and it starts early on in the season. Our main focus is to start out fast and start out hot early. That way we can prepare ourselves to get to that stage.”
Surtain clearly believes Denver has the pieces in place to contend for a title this fall.
“I think we have all of the right pieces and the right team," PS2 said. "The coaches invest a lot into us and pour a lot into us, too. When you put all of that together, it makes for a great team. We have the right guys with the right mentality to start things off the right way. This team is great all across the board."
Surtain and guard Quinn Meinerz spoke to media members on Tuesday after reporting for camp. Here are five quick takeaways from their podium sessions.
1. The Broncos' new facility is amazing: Denver just completed a beautiful, $175 million facility update, and the players clearly love it. Meinerz said it's "incredible," with underground parking among the perks he appreciates. "When I get done with practice, my truck’s not going to be 150 degrees, that’s a nice little thing," he said. "The locker room is close, the food’s right there, the weight room’s right there, the field’s right here. The ease of everything is just incredible." Meinerz said owners Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner did an "exceptional job." Surtain eochoed those remarks. "I was like, ‘Wow.’ I was in awe," PS2 said. "It’s pretty special. It’s a testament to the Ownership Group, Greg and Carrie, for putting this together. It’s awesome."
2. Davis Webb is putting his mark on Denver's offense: Sean Payton promoted Webb from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator this offseason, a title that now includes play-calling. It won't merely be Webb calling plays from Payton's offense, either. "It’s not like a complete overhaul of the offense, but there are a lot of new fun elements, new wrinkles, new stuff to it," Meinerz said Tuesday. "When you get used to a system for so long, there’s some of that beginner learning that you kind of like miss out on, so it’s kind of nice to have a little refresh of things for us to have to learn on this offense for us to re-lock into. It’s not necessarily monotonous, the same, the same, the same, the same. So it’s nice to have, there are still some similar elements to this offense, but then there’s a nice little sprinkle of additions of what Davis has come up with, what Coach Strief has come up with, what Chris Morgan has come up with, so it’s going to be good.”
3. Broncos' offensive line ready to create lanes for a healthy J.K. Dobbins: Now back from a foot injury, Dobbins will look to pick up where he left off last season. “I’m super excited to have J.K. back," Meinerz said. "I think we really got a flow of the game. It was super fun to have those conversations at lunch of like, ‘Hey, how do you see this play this week against this front? Or if they bring this blitz, how do you want us to do that?’ When you’re getting coached how to do a play, that’s one perspective, but us actually playing the game and understanding how we can be better as an offensive line for the running backs, and how the running backs can be better for the offensive line and working together in that sense. It’s been really fun to work with J.K. He’s got an unbelievable spirit that gives us some juice on the offense. I’m excited to have more fun in the run game with J.K.”
4. Denver guard Ben Powers returned from injury, took a pay cut: Powers suffered a Lisfranc injury in December and played through it, undergoing surgery this offseason. After he returned, the veteran guard agreed to take a pay cut with more guaranteed money. “He really personifies the energy and what we have in our room here as an offensive line," Meinerz said of Powers. "He’s a tough S.O.B. He’s funny, he works hard. It’s everything that you want in a guard and to have in your offensive line room. Ben and I constantly are talking about, ‘How do you see this player?’ Because being left and right, different players kind of do different moves. It’s been fun to just communicate football like, ‘Hey, how do you see this block?’ Because we both play guard, but I think we both play it in different ways. I think it’s been fun to bounce ideas of how we attack certain plays. Ben’s so tough, and you wouldn’t know that he was going through that [injury], and that’s just part of the fabric here at our offensive line.”
5. Broncos need to replace John Franklin-Myers: After losing JFM in free agency, two of Denver's notable candidates to replace him are Sai’vion Jones and Eyioma Uwazurike. Surtain is confident in both players. "Obviously, when great players leave, you have to count on other guys to step up," PS2 said. "Like you mentioned, Sai’vion, and ‘Enyi,' all of those guys, they've been working very hard. Obviously, Sai’vion, a young guy stepping up last year in his role. And ‘Enyi,’ he’s been a baller as well, stepping up in his role too, year in and year out. So I feel like the expectations stay the same even when ‘JFM’ was here. I know that room holds each other to high standards, and I feel like they expect the same out of both those two.”
The Broncos will have a two-day acclimation period on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of their first practice of training camp on Friday. Next month, the team will play three preseason games. We'll cover all of Denver's upcoming camp and preseason developments on Broncos Wire.
