The Denver Broncos have brought back much of the same roster that reached the AFC Championship game last season, but there are several new faces who could turn heads this summer.
The Broncos focused on re-signing in-house free agents this spring, and there were no splashy outside free agent additions this offseason. Denver did sign a veteran safety, though, and it will be fascinating to see how the safety competition shakes out during training camp and preseason.
Before camp practices kick off later this week, here's a quick look at five new arrivals that fans should be tracking this summer.
5. DB Tycen Anderson: Denver's only outside free agent signing in March, Anderson joins the club as a special teams ace fighting for a backup spot at safety. Brandon Jones and Talanoa Hufunga are returning starters, and Devon Key is the clear favorite for the third spot. That could leave Anderson competing with seventh-round draft pick Miles Scott, veteran JL Skinner and undrafted rookie Parker Robertson for a backup spot and special teams role.
4. LB Red Murdock: After cutting Dre Greenlaw, the Broncos did not sign another linebacker during free agency. The team did use the final pick in the NFL draft to select Murdock, and they added coveted undrafted free agent Taurean York as well. Murdock and York will be competing with Karene Reid, Jordan Turner and Lavelle Bailey this summer.
3. TE Justin Joly: Evan Engram will be a 32-year-old free agent after the season ends, and Adam Trautman is used primarily as a blocker. So Joly has a great opportunity to eventually emerge as the team's long-term receiving tight end, but it might be a tough task to carve out a big role as a rookie.
2. RB Jonah Coleman: J.K. Dobbins is the clear starter and RJ Harvey will rotate in behind him, but Coleman could win a third-down role as a reliable pass-blocker and capable receiver out of the backfield. Coleman's pass protection earned strong grades coming out of college, but he now has to prove himself against NFL competition.
1. WR Jaylen Waddle: He is, of course, the Broncos' most notable addition. Denver's only splash of the offseason came via trade when they agreed to send multiple draft picks to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for the talented receiver. Waddle adds speed and big-play ability to Denver's offense, and he will be the player to watch this summer.
Broncos veterans are scheduled to report for training camp on Tuesday, and the team's first practice with fans in attendance is scheduled for Friday (view the full training camp schedule).
