5-Star Louisiana OL Albert Simien commits to Notre Dame

On Friday the Notre Dame football recruiting machine hit the ludicrous speed button, because that’s when 5-Star offensive lineman, Albert Simien, announced on ESPN his commitment to the Irish and its 2027 class.

The 6’5″ 295 pound offensive lineman from Sam Houston High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana, chose the Irish over his other finalists, the Texas A&M Aggies and the LSU Tigers. As a 5-Star prospect, however, he held offers from all over the country including the Alabama Crimson Tide, Michigan Wolverines, Oregon Ducks and many more.

From 247:

– Effective drive blocker who flashes power in his hands.
– Basketball player whose functional athleticism in that environment provides valuable insight into flexibility and movement patterns.
– Showed noticeable year-over-year improvement from sophomore to junior campaign.
– Travels on schedule as a puller and climber.
– Not necessarily a ballerina in pass protection, but consistently stays in front of his matchup.
– Encouraging shot put numbers suggest higher power capacity.
– Likely possesses frame length to provide tackle snaps if needed, but projects higher as an IOL who could become a high-major multi-year starter and play beyond college.

From Rivals:

Dominant interior offensive line prospect whose combination of length, functional mobility, and balance makes him one of the top linemen in the 2027 cycle. Measured just under 6-foot-3 and around 270 pounds prior to his junior season with plus length, including 34-inch arms. Lines up at left tackle for his high school, where he consistently controls the line of scrimmage. Dominant run blocker who manipulates defenders with his length, strength, and coordination. Moves easily to the second level and maintains leverage to seal running lanes. Has outstanding lower body flexibility as a mover. Equally effective in pass protection with controlled feet and strong balance in his set. Rarely off-platform and plays with a calm, steady demeanor. Shows up as a better athlete on the field than he tests in combine settings. Does not overwhelm from a stature standpoint and is slightly shorter than ideal for a top interior prospect, but compensates with technique, consistency, and competitive toughness. Well-rounded game, positional versatility, and dominant film make him one of the safest offensive line prospects in the 2027 cycle.

This is the 21st commitment for Notre Dame’s 2027 football recruiting class, and the first one from the state of Louisiana. Despite a number of big catholic high schools in the state, Notre Dame doesn’t pull much out of the state on a regular basis – but this is a MASSIVE get for Notre Dame both literally and figuratively. With Simien’s pledge, the Irish are now in realistic position to possible have the #1 recruiting class in the nation this cycle.

Pulling 5-Star offensive linemen SHOULD be what Notre Dame does best, but they have long recruited the trenches well and then given them some of the best coaching in the country. They have a ridiculously good haul of offensive linemen for the last two cycles – no notes.

Again… Notre Dame SHOULD be getting 5-Star offensive linemen, but the combination of the state of Louisiana, LSU and Kiffin, and Texas A&M with their recruiting war chest – it makes this an even bigger deal. Albert is one of those players that will likely see meaningful playing time at some point in his first two seasons in South Bend. The new 5 year rule isn’t for him, if you know what I mean (and if you don’t know what I mean, it’s that Simien may end up being the best Irish guard since Quenton Nelson). There’s just so much to like about Simien’s game here, that we should all probably throw a party.
