Jaydon Blue has officially found an NFL home. He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round with the 149th overall pick.
In 2024, Blue was a very solid player for the Longhorns. He finished second on the team with 730 rushing yards and led the team with eight rushing touchdowns while averaging 5.4 yards per carry on 134 attempts. This nearly doubled his production across the board from 2023 when he carried the ball 65 times and gained 398 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns.
Now, let's take a look at five reasons why the Cowboys should excited about drafting Blue:
Speed kills in the game of football, and Blue had that immensely. He was clocked at 4.38 at the combine back in March. Once he gets in the open field, you can pretty much expect him to separate from defenders and likely hit his head on the goal post. Have that top gear is valuable at the running back spot.
If you're thinking that Blue is a one-trick pony, think again. He hauled in 42 receptions for 368 yards and six touchdowns last season. With his speed, Blue is a matchup nightmare for linebackers when he comes out of the backfield on a pass play, and he can also fly past defensive backs if need be. This makes him a dynamic weapon that has to game planned for in multiple ways.
Blue has top end speed, as was mentioned earlier. However, he's also very exclusive. He has the ability to plant one foot in the ground, make a guy miss, and continue running downfield without losing his speed. This makes Blue to idela type of player to get the ball to out in space so that he can create and make big plays.
This is one of the aspects of the running back position that doesn't get talked about enough. The elusivenees of Blue wouldn't he possible without excellent vision. He can slither between defenders while keeping his excellent speed. Blue is a true talent with plenty of attributes, but his vision is what makes him special.
The running back position takes a pounding. So, it's imperative to be able to absorb hits and still have the ability to stay upright. In 2024, 73% of Blue's yards came after contact. Having a player that has top-tier speed and can take some hits and keep on chugging is a plus.
