Jahdae Barron is now a Denver Bronco. The former Longhorns defensive back was picked 20th in the first round of the NFL Draft. Barron is the 2nd Texas Ex taken in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Here are five reasons the Broncos should be excited to have Barron on their roster?
Barron was named the 2024 Thorpe Award winner as the best defensive back in the country. The Austin native beat out Ohio State Buckeyes safety Caleb Downs and Georgia Bulldogs safety Malaki Starks for the honor.
Barron was the third Texas Longhorn to win the annual prize. UT's Michael Huff and Aaron Ross won it in back-to-back years in 2005 and 2006.
The senior DB led the SEC with five interceptions. He contributed 67 tackles, 11 pass breakups and a fumble recovery. Barron has played in a total of 56 games during his college career at the University of Texas. He has also made 38 starts.
With Barron leading the group, the Longhorns lead the country in fewest passing yards allowed at 143.1 per game and turnovers gained with 28. Texas had No. 2 in scoring defense in the nation.
Barron can play multiple positions in the defensive backfield. Former Las Vegas Raiders GM Mike Maycock thanks that is something that makes Barron stand apart from other DBs in the draft.
"I would look at the Texas corner-slash-nickel, Jahdae Barron," Maycock said during the interview. "Most people have him as the third or fourth corner in the draft, but I think some teams around the lake really like this kid. I like the kid. He's aggressive, quick, tough, he's got position versatility where he can kick inside and play nickel and compete at a high level."
ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit. "I think it's Jahdae Barron. That would be my guy," Herbstreit said when asked who his top corner pick would be. "I covered this guy a lot, probably called 11 or 12 of his games. When you play the slot, it's not just, okay, he's on the inside, [but] he's on run support, he's blitzing, he's playing space, he's playing man [coverage]. The versatility is off the charts with him."
Barron posted an impressive 4.39, 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, seventh among defensive backs at this year's event and faster than expected.
Even more impressive was the Pflugerville product's 1.50 in the 10-yard split, which was tied for the second-fastest start of the combine. Barron reached a top speed of 23.3 mph, the fifth-fastest mark among DBs that participated in on-field drills.
“I’ve always believed my NFL dream was in reach,” Barron said after his workout. “I’ve always had faith in that and I always put my faith in God, so I just knew I had to do my part to put the work in over the years. I grew up to be a mature person on and off the field and it allowed me to be here today. I’m just dialed. I pay attention to my craft and I’m executing at a high pace. Everything I did in the past, it led me to this point, so I want to most definitely show that.”
If his college career is any indication, Barron will bleed the color of his new team.
How much did Barron love being a Texas Longhorn? He didn't want to wear anything but Burnt Orange for the Texas Pro Day. The pro day gear Nike provided the prospects was mostly black with some grey and some orange. But Barron wanted to wear the Burnt Orange one more time and refused to wear the provided apparel.
“I didn't wear any of the Pro Day gear because it was gray and it was black. I wanted to wear burnt orange for one last time.”
