5 Players That Roma Should Target This Summer
It has been a memorable return to club management for Claudio Ranieri since taking the AS Roma job in the winter. It has reversed the team’s fortunes immediately, and they now look on course to achieve a European finish if they can maintain the red-hot form that they have shown over the last two months. However, after Dybala’s recent injury there are not many people who know how to bet on soccer online that would place money on Roma to finish above 7th place.
But, the attentions will soon switch to the upcoming transfer window, as Roma look to strengthen their squad in the hope of reigniting their chances of regularly finishing in a Champions League spot.
A lot of their plans this summer will hinge on their final position in the Serie A standings, but which players could the Italian club attempt to sign in the summer?
Centre Back
AS Roma will be hoping to enhance their defensive options this summer, with Mats Hummels likely to leave the club after his deal expires. There is a number of interesting free agent options that the club could look to explore, with PSV defender Oliver Boscagli among those.
The 27-year-old has been a key player for the Dutch side throughout this season, making 23 appearances in the Eredivisie. He also has previous experience at the highest level after making ten Champions League appearances for PSV this term.
His aerial presence could be a vital trait worth considering, as he wins an average of 1.3 aerial duals per match, and has a very respectable pass completion rate of 88.6%.
Left Winger
Stephan El Shaarawy is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at AS Roma, meaning that he could be set to leave the club this summer. The Italian club will be in the market for wingers on both sides, and there could be some standout selections available for the Serie A giants.
A glamour signing could come in the form of Leroy Sane, as the German is expected to leave Bayern Munich when his current deal expires in the summer. Sane has enjoyed a fine season for the Bavarian club this term, netting seven goals and registering four assists in 22 appearances.
He has also scored once in four starts in the Champions League. However, Bayern’s intention to buy younger stars could impact Sane, as he turns 30 next January. If Roma achieve Champions League qualification, they could potentially be in the running for the German’s signature.
Right Winger
AS Roma may also be in the market for a right winger this summer, and they could be tempted to offer an exit route to Manchester United outcast Jadon Sancho.
The winger has spent this season on loan at Chelsea, registering six goal involvements in 23 Premier League outings. However, rumours are intensifying that the Blues will opt against making his signing a permanent one.
Sancho’s future at United already looks to be over after burning his bridges, and it is unlikely that Ruben Amorim will have a place for him in his starting eleven. Therefore, a cut-price move away from the club looks like an obvious solution for all parties this summer. Roma could opt to make a move for the winger, as his pace could be a good trait worth utilising on the right-hand side of the attack.
Defensive Midfield
Roma looks well-stocked in the midfield area, with stars such as Manu Kone and Leandro Paredes on the books. However, the latter isn’t getting any younger, meaning that the club opt to bring in fresh legs in the holding midfield area.
It is also worth noting that this summer could be an idea opportunity to cash in on the Argentinean as he only has 12 months left to run on his current deal. Thomas Partey could be an affordable option for the club this summer, as the Gunners will look to sell the midfielder in order to freshen up their options in the position.
Partey has been a key player for the Gunners this term, making 28 Premier League appearances, and registering five goal involvements. The Ghana international has also average a pass completion rate of 88.8%, and he makes an average of one interception per 90.
Striker
Almost every club across Europe will be in the market for a striker this summer, and AS Roma may be no different following the latest injury news surrounding Paulo Dybala.
Artem Dovbyk will likely continue to be the number one striker, but the Italian side could opt to bring in an able deputy. Dominic Calvert-Lewin could be an affordable option, as his current deal with Everton expires this summer. The 28-year-old has endured another mixed campaign at Goodison Park, scoring just three goals in 19 starts.
A fresh start for the dynamic striker could be needed to get his career back on track, and he ticks plenty of boxes in terms of an affordable target for the Rome-based club this summer.
