The San Francisco 49ers have had what felt like an injury epidemic in training camp. And while some of the injured Niners held out of practice may not have sustained serious injuries, one Niners player is likely out for the year.
49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is out with a significant injury. Pearsall injured his PCL. The timing couldn't have been worse.
Pearsall was in need of a breakout campaign in what stood as a contract year after falling below expectations in his first couple of seasons. He will have to prove himself next season, but he could have competition.
Cameron Sheath of Pro Football Sports Network predicted the Niners to draft Pearsall's replacement in Arizona State Sun Devils wide receiver Omarion Miller. David Bonilla of 49ers Webzone discussed the selection in the mock draft. Here's some of what Bonilla had to say about the potential move.
"The hope was that Pearsall would finally put together a breakout—and healthy—2026 season after missing 14 games during his first two NFL seasons. A PCL injury hampered the former first-round pick in 2025, and the lingering effects of that injury will force him to undergo season-ending surgery this year.
It's a worst-case scenario for Pearsall, the No. 31 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. With the wide receiver unable to play in 2026, it seems increasingly unlikely that the 49ers will exercise the fifth-year option in his rookie contract. That would make the 2027 season a true make-or-break year for the young wideout.
Meanwhile, Miller (6-2, 210) is coming off a productive 2025 campaign in which he recorded 45 catches for 808 yards and eight touchdowns. He averaged an impressive 18 yards per reception."

Pearsall's career is not over. Presumably he will get every opportunity to prove himself next year for whatever team he plays. He just may need to do so on a discounted contract. Still, he can count on having competition when he takes the field next season.
Rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling is already making an impact in camp despite having endured a brief injury setback. Whether the Niners add another young receiver or not, Pearsall's spot on the depth chart certainly is not secure. He will have to earn a high spot on the depth chart.
The Niners wide receiver room is among the more fascinating position groups to monitor in the NFL this preseason. We'll keep an eye on how it unfolds.
