The San Francisco 49ers have been active in the first week of the new league year, signing players, re-signing players and trading for players with the hopes that they can make a run in 2026.
Among the new players brought in this week is offensive tackle Vederian Lowe, who signed a two-year deal early in the process.
Before Lowe plays a snap for San Francisco, let's take a chance to get to know him. Here are four things that 49ers fans should know about Lowe.
Lowe committed to the University of Illinois after his time at Auburn High School in Rockford, Illinois. With the Fighting Illini, he made 52 starts at tackle, which was a school record. He was solid in college, but never really separated himself from other offensive tackles.
After the Minnesota Vikings took him in the sixth-round of the 2022 NFL draft, Lowe was traded to the New England Patriots before his second season. Over the last three years in New England, he got plenty of opportunities, appearing in 42 games and starting 25 split between left and right tackle.
In 2024, Lowe appeared in 14 games at left tackle and started 13. Pro Football Focus gave him a 54.0 overall grade, which included a 45.8 run-blocking grade and a 66.9 pass-blocking grade.
Lowe is likely joining the 49ers to be the top swing tackle on the roster, while backing up Trent Williams and Colton McKivitz. In a recent interview, Lowe laid out his desires for the offseason plainly.
“My only thing that I’m worried about is just going there, making a great impression on my teammates and on coaches. Being a guy they can depend on if and when my number’s called,” Lowe told WIFR after signing with San Francisco.
