The AFC was full of great teams last year. We had the usual suspects, but then we also had a few surprises along the way.
So, who are the sleepers this year that might make a Super Bowl run?
These four AFC teams might surprise you.
The Jaguars came out of nowhere to overtake the Colts for the AFC South division. The Colts led most of the year before the Jags overtook them and won the division. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who struggled a little bit at the beginning of the season, came on strong at the end, but they were upset, so to speak, by the Buffalo Bills.
The Jags are probably going to be favored again this year. They have the tools to make a serious Super Bowl run if they can get out of their own way. In their loss to the Bills, they turned the ball over at critical moments, but even then, they still had a chance. If Lawrence can get off to a quick start, they could be the team to beat in the AFC along with the Denver Broncos.
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow thinks this Bengals team could be a Super Bowl contender, and he may not be wrong, but a lot of factors will have to go into that prediction. First of all, Burrow's health. We've all seen what has happened when Joe Burrow is healthy and what this team can do. It wasn't that long ago that Burrow took the Bengals to the Super Bowl. Besides Burrow's health, the Bengals' defense has been the main problem.
As good as their offense has been, their defense has been very bad. They traded for former New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to shore up that defense. Burrow seems to think that might be enough to get them over the top.
The Chargers may not exactly be a surprise team to many, but their run last year surprised a lot of people. Quarterback Justin Herbert was finally able to break through and get his team to the playoffs, only to lose to the New England Patriots. However, it gave their fans hope that maybe they are finally on the right path and will make some noise in the AFC West. Don't be surprised if the Broncos and Chargers are neck and neck for that division at the end of the season.
I know some people might think that's insane to include the Raiders on this list, but they aren't that far off. They had several close losses last year, and it seems as if all they were missing was a few pieces, especially at quarterback. Now they may have that in Kirk Cousins and Fernando Mendoza, and with Maxx Crosby returning, the Raiders should be a better team this year.
