Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham has officially stepped up to shut down a rapidly spreading internet rumor claiming she and superstar Caitlin Clark ignored their coach's instructions on Monday's game-winning play. The media frenzy began after a lighthearted post began circulating on social media, jokingly depicting the Fever duo as having improvised the 31-foot dagger that secured a 78-76 win over the Washington Mystics.
While Clark showed solidarity by commenting, "Love you Soph," under the post, some pundits and fans took the meme entirely too literally, using it to run with the narrative that Clark wasn't a target on the final play of the game.
Cunningham quickly took to social media to deliver a direct reality check, firing back, "you guys read too much into things. that’s THE EXACT play our coach drew up and we executed it perfectly!"
The cross-court dime from Cunningham to Clark was as close to perfect as you'll find, and Clark delivered in the clutch when it mattered most.
While it wasn't confirmed that Kelsey Mitchell was the go-to option on the inbounds play, it certainly didn't seem like Cunningham and Clark's teammate was worried in the slightest about not getting the ball on the final possession. If anything, it was just the opposite.
Speaking after the game, Mitchell also confirmed that "that was the way it was written up," while also praising Clark by stating that when she saw the shot go up, she knew it was "money."
Whether Mitchell meant the play was drawn up for Clark, or that she was supposed to get the ball if Mitchell was covered (which she was), the Fever standout unquestionably had no issue at all with how the play transpired.
For good measure, if, by some off chance, Cunningham had gone rogue on the final play (she didn't) to get Clark the ball, it's safe to assume she wouldn't have posted that meme. But the fact that she did added a fun layer of sarcasm to a team that picked up a much-needed win after dropping three of four games.
Instead of falling to 5-6 on the season, the Fever moved above the .500 mark and hopefully can build some momentum heading into Thursday's game against the Chicago Sky.
