Why Ashwin wants Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh in the KKR deal​

Ashwin was clear that a Cameron Green-based swap carried real risk for Mumbai Indians. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ash ki Baat, he questioned whether the Australian would even be available for a full season with the 2027 Ashes on the horizon.


"Don't count out Hardik Pandya going to a franchise other than CSK or KKR," Ashwin said. "The talks are that CSK will give Dube and a pacer, while KKR gives away Cameron Green." He then raised the availability concern at the heart of his argument. "What happens if Green decides to leave to focus on the Ashes next year?" he added.

Ashwin was firm on what would make the deal worthwhile for Mumbai Indians. "If I were MI, I would accept a deal with KKR on only one condition, which is getting Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh in return," he said. "That is the only way MI gets stronger."

His reasoning aligns with earlier reports that Mumbai Indians had demanded Indian players such as Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh in any Hardik Pandya trade. That was a sticking point KKR were reportedly reluctant to meet, with the Knight Riders keen on Hardik as a leadership option following Ajinkya Rahane's departure.

Ashwin's condition exposes the risk in a Cameron Green swap​

Ashwin's scepticism of the Aussie batter isn't unfounded. Fans and team owners have seen time and again that when it comes to the Ashes, English and Aussie players don't think twice before backing out. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have all left multi-million-dollar offers just to keep themselves fit for the WTC or the Ashes.

For a Mumbai Indians side that is trying to rebuild, it would do little to help that other than fester meaningless uncertainty. Meanwhile, two proven Indian match-winners, Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh, by contrast, would address exactly the areas MI look thin in. That is the trade-off Ashwin is pointing to, and it is a sound one.

But the problem for Mumbai Indians is leverage. If Hardik Pandya is set on leaving and KKR can offer him the captaincy, the Knight Riders may hold the stronger hand. That could leave MI settling for a package built around Green rather than the Indian core Ashwin covets.

Additionally, MI will also have to deal with another player for their limited overseas spot if they get Green. Two quality Indian players in the form of Rinku and Rana may be better, reliable options.

For now it remains an unconfirmed rumour, but his intervention neatly frames the calculation Mumbai Indians must get right if they are to come out of this saga stronger rather than weaker.
