For the Texas football program, the end of spring practices featured a surprise scholarship.

Senior receiver Rett Andersen learned Saturday that he had been awarded a scholarship. Andersen joined the Longhorns as a walk-on ahead of the 2023 season.

In a video that Texas posted to its social media platforms on Saturday, Andersen was given the good news at a team meeting. After UT head coach Steve Sarkisian announced that Andersen was now on scholarship, he was mobbed by his teammates.

"This is a dream come true for every walk-on," Andersen later told the room. "I couldn't want to do it with any other guys than y'all. ... It's been a good three years, but let's keep it rolling."

A 5-foot-11, 189-pound receiver out of San Antonio, Andersen has appeared in nine games since he arrived at Texas. According to Pro Football Focus, most of Andersen's work this past season was done on special teams. But against Sam Houston in 2025, he did record the only catch of his career.
