The World Cup has been a fun distraction as Texas Longhorns fans eagerly await the start of the college football season. One very distinguishing feature that separates CFB from any other big time sport is the bands. Nothing punctuates a touchdown, a big play or a score more than a college fight song.
The United States team is having unprecedented success in this year's tournament. There is a chance the United States could go deeper into the tournament than it has in modern history. The USMNT made the final four in 1930. But back then there were only 13 teams in the event. Since the Great Depression, Team USA has only made the final 16 three times.
After multiple expansions, the World Cup now features 48 teams. The last time the USA made the final 16 was in Qatar 2022. But this time feels different. The tournament is being hosted by America, Canada and Mexico. All of the USMNT's games have been in the states. It looks like the best USA team in decades.
Yet, in some ways, soccer still feels foreign to many Americans. So Wilson F. Ball had an idea to sprinkle in a little American spice. The college football analyst added one of the most American of traditions: college fight songs. And of the three USMNT goals he added fight songs to, he used 'Texas Fight' for one of them.
The interesting thing is how well it works. Especially, after the video (VAR) review that awarded the United States a goal after offsides was called on the field. It feels very familiar. Like waiting to see if instant replay determined if the ball crossed into the endzone on an Arch Manning touchdown run.
The video works so well, the Florida State Seminoles marching band has volunteered to recreate it live.
It is a fun mix of the most American of sports (college football) with the world's game that has captivated Americans this summer.
