The United States men's national soccer team secured a historic World Cup victory Wednesday night, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0. The win marked the first time since 2002 since the Americans won a World Cup knockout match. The United States will face Belgium in a Round of 16 matchup on Monday in Seattle.
In Wednesday night's match, Folarin Balogun put the Americans ahead in the 45th minute, sending fans into celebration before later being shown a red card. Malik Tillman sealed the 2-0 victory with a free kick in the 82nd minute.
As the final whistle sounded, cheers erupted at viewing parties, including one at Gol PDX on Southeast Hawthorne, where standing-room-only crowds packed spilled onto the sidewalk.
"That was awesome; I love being in this environment!" said Justine Reid. "I need the crowd around me. It's so exciting."
Entering the match, the Americans faced a win-or-go-home scenario, and fans arrived armed with optimism and in one case, a props.
"It is the FIFA World Cup match ball, and I have one!" said Quentin Godman, showing off the soccer ball before kickoff. "If I could, I'd kick it in the net, but the boys will do it for us."
They did just that.
Fans praised a U.S. squad that they believe is capable of making a tournament run.
"This is the best U.S. team I've seen in years," said Vernon Hall. "We're scoring goals, and we're the host nation. It's such a good vibe. I mean, look around us: There's kind of a fever pitch."
Some fans found humor in the match's details.
"It was great, the first goal was for Bosnia, the second goal was for Herzegovina," joked Nathaniel McMahan.
The Portland Timbers will host a Portland Timbers Soccer Celebration event at Providence Park on Monday, July 6, with a live viewing of the United States' match against Belgium. Gates open at 4 p.m. Entry into Providence Park is free, but all fans must reserve a ticket.
