PEORIA — Quinn Cox made a name for himself Thursday with an upset of a storied champion in the 100th Peoria City Men's Golf Championship.
Cox, the No. 8 seed, upset No. 1 seed and three-time defending champion Scott Phegley, 1-up, in a quarterfinals match that saw both golfers trade heavyweight shots with a combined 13 birdies at Kellogg Golf Course.
Cox now moves on to Friday's semifinals in a Championship Flight field that has seen the top two seeds eliminated.
"It was awesome," said Quinn, 22. "Scott is somebody I really look up to. He's one of the best in the area and a really good guy. I've learned so much from him, and to be able to beat him is just amazing.
"It's so exciting."
Cox, a Peoria native, played at Peoria Christian in his prep days. He moved on to play two years at ICC, earning second-team All-America honors, and then joined Bradley University's team.

Phegley, meanwhile, sees his title run end. He is one of only four golfers in the 100-year history of the Men's City to win the tournament at least three straight years. That legends list:
