Canada’s men’s national team seemingly couldn’t catch a break in their opening match of theFIFA World Cup against Bosnia-Herzegovina on Friday after a shocking near-goal at a virtually empty net miraculously stayed out.

In the 54th minute of the match, Canada’s captain Stephen Eustáquio fed the ball to Richie Laryea, staring at a wide-open net. Laryea, with his team already down 1-0 in the second half, fired the shot, only for a wild sequence of events to unfold.

Despite seemingly facing an empty net, Laryea’s shot miraculously deflected off the foot of Bosnia’s Sead Kolasinac before deflecting off the crossbar back into the field of play.

FOX Sports commentators Darren Fletcher and Owen Hargreaves couldn’t believe their eyes when the ball did not make its way into the net.

The near-miss didn’t spell immediate doom for Canada,as a late-game goal tied the score and ultimately led to a draw.
