LEOMINSTER — Dominic Carr had a terrific opportunity to continue his lacrosse career at the collegiate level.
However, after much thought and deliberation, the Leominster High senior, who was recruited by Wentworth, elected to solely focus on his schoolwork when he heads to Boston in the fall.
“Ultimately I chose Northeastern just because of the academics,” Carr, 17, said April 11 before a game at Doyle Field. “They don’t have a (NCAA) team even though they’re a D1 school, but they have a competitive club team which travels all around.”
So, Carr, who has a 3.98 unweighted grade point average, plans to try out for the Huskies’ club team and major in mechanical engineering at highly competitive Northeastern, which has an acceptance rate of 5.2%.
“I feel like that’s the best fit for me academically and I could still play lacrosse in my free time,” Carr said.

In the meantime, Carr is focused athletically on wrapping up a stellar lacrosse career for the Blue Devils.
Carr first picked up a stick in the fourth grade when he played for the Rebels, a youth program that draws players from mainly Leominster, Lunenburg and Fitchburg. He was called up to the LHS varsity midway through his freshman year and has been a starter since the end of his sophomore season.
“We’ve been asking a ton of him since he’s been a sophomore, and he’s never asked for less on his plate,” said Colin Davis, who has coached the Blue Devils since the program’s inception in 2004. “For us, he’s basically the definition of indispensable. He makes everything else work.
“He’s a great leader, great communicator, great teammate. Just always helping his teammates get better and just being that type of kid you want representing your team and your school as a teacher and a coach here.”

A 5-foot-11, 186-pound midfielder, Carr contributes in all phases and situations ‒ offense, defense, man up, man down, and as a wing on faceoffs.
He’s proficient and productive, finishing second on the team in scoring as a sophomore and topping the table in goals (28) and points (40) last season.
Carr currently leads the Blue Devils with a 5-2-7 line and is closing in on a major milestone.
“I think I’m at about 90 right now, so I feel it’s attainable,” Carr said of registering 100 career points. “But my biggest goal ‒ and it’s been a goal ever since that one time we made it (my freshman year) ‒ is to make states again. We haven’t been to the tournament in a while.”
The Blue Devils have started slowly, with one win in their first five games, but they remain committed to the task at hand thanks to, in part, the senior leadership of captains Chase Kranz, Gio DiMarzio, Riley Morrison, and Carr, who also served in that capacity last year.
“We’re in the best division in Central Mass. (Mid-Wach A), so it’s definitely tough for us,” Carr said, “but it brings up our power ranking.”

Carr, who played soccer as a freshman and sophomore and golf as a junior, is an active member of the student body. He’s the senior class treasurer, a member of the senior prom committee, a class mentor, and vice president of the school’s Best Buddies program.
“That club brings joy to my eyes seeing all those life-skill students happy,” Carr said. “That’s just a club that I enjoy and I’m glad I’m a part of it.”
While Carr interacts and works with everyone in Best Buddies, he’s teamed with Joe Liddy.
“He’s a great, happy kid and I’m just happy to be paired with him this year,” he said.
Carr, a National Honor Society inductee who is ranked 12th in a class of 400-plus students, is currently carrying a rigorous load academically.
There’s advanced placement physics and honors courses in calculus, English, principles of engineering, and Spanish III, and, through a dual enrollment program with Mount Wachusett, management and marketing. And, oh yeah, he’s a teacher’s assistant in a freshman honors history class taught by John Doherty, who is an assistant lacrosse coach.
Outside of school, Carr works part-time at Market Basket in Leominster, the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association fields in Lancaster and as a lifeguard at Brooks Pond in Leominster.
“It’s a busy time with lacrosse, school, college stuff, all that, but we’re still making it work,” Carr said.
Carr's favorites
Here are a few lighthearted and insightful thoughts from Dominic Carr as he waits to pocket another goal, register an assist or scoop up a grounder:
Favorite food: “I know it’s pretty basic, but steak and sweet potatoes.”
Favorite ice cream: Mint chocolate chip
Favorite restaurant: “Yama Zakura. It’s a sushi place in Northborough. I love sushi. That’s probably my second favorite food.”
Favorite musician: “I’m kind of an all-around guy, but I probably like country music the best. I listen to some Morgan Wallen, some Zac Brown Band. A little bit of everything.”
Favorite holiday: “Christmas because we have it at my house and get all the family together.”
Favorite sports team: New England Patriots
Favorite subject: Science
Favorite TV show: “I like the Netflix series ‘All American.’ It’s just been the staple, something me and my mom watch.”
Sports superstition: “I always have to eat a banana before a game.”
Most memorable moment: “The Oakmont game my sophomore year when we won (8-7) in overtime. I was running down the field, catching some cramps and passed the ball to one of my junior friends at the time, Kegan Amarasinghe, and he scored in overtime. It was just a great day.” (Note: Carr scored four goals in the game.)
Invite any three people to dinner: “The first one would be Tom Brady because he’s an awesome motivator and he’s always been an idol to me. And the next two are my mother and father (Paula and Jonathan) because they’ve always been there for me. They’ve been there for me through thick and thin.”
