What started as a simple social media invite from a rapper-turned-women's sports fan will officially become a large-scale event in Las Vegas.
Flavor Flav’s “She’s Got Game” celebratory weekend was officially greenlit by Clark County in a unanimous vote on Tuesday, May 19.
Flavor Flav and his manager, Rhiannon Rae Ellis, both appeared in-person to present their plan for a parade honoring women athletes. Commissioners approved the details, granting the procession to begin on July 16 at 8 p.m. PT at the Bellagio hotel, then continue south on the Las Vegas Strip and end at Toshiba Plaza.
She’s Got Game, LLC, is also working with MGM Resorts to create a full itinerary of events for what Flavor Flav is calling “SHE Weekend,” from July 16-19.
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity and I’m honored,” Flavor Flav told commissioners. “Las Vegas is my city. This is the best city. Thank you all for giving me this opportunity for these girls. This is going to be real big. It’s going to be a historical event.”
Ellis noted that the event started as an “innocent tweet to support and celebrate female athletes,” claiming that it has now “turned into a movement.”
This comes after the former reality television star initially extended an open invite to the U.S. women’s hockey team in February after they won Olympic gold in the Milan Cortina Olympics. The team had previously declined an invitation to attend President Trump’s State of the Union.
“If the USA Women’s Hocket team wants a real celebration and invite,,, I’ll host them in Las Vegas. Do some nice dinners and shows and good times,” Flavor Flav wrote. “I’m sure I can get a hotel and airline to help me out here and celebrate these women for real for real.”
Flavor Flav made a similar offer soon after, inviting the University of Georgia women's tennis team to a parade in Las Vegas to be "front and center" after a photo from their recent trip to the White House sparked controversy online.
Now, that parade is more than an idea.
In a funny moment from his appearance before the Clark County commissioners, Flavor Flav began a speech about his event, saying, “You know I am a girl dad.”
He was quickly interrupted by a commissioner who couldn’t help but laugh as he required the speaker to state his name for the record.
“William Drayton, AKA Flavor Flav,” he said.
