The era of the Jays is over.
NBA champion Jaylen Brown has been traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, according to NBA.com News Service, ending a 10-year stint with the Boston Celtics, with whom he won the 2024 NBA championship.
In exchange for Brown, the Celtics are getting 36-year-old Paul George, a nine-time All Star and Olympic gold medalist, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks for future NBA drafts.
Sports commentator and former Celtics player Kendrick Perkins said that he does not approve of Brown's abrupt exit, criticizing general manager Brad Stevens for getting an inconsistent veteran of the sport in exchange for a Finals MVP.
"He just basically handed the Philadelphia 76ers a trip to the NBA Finals next year," Perkins said.
Here's what the online sports world had to say about the trade.
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy said that he has trust in Stevens' decision-making and believes that there is more coming from the manager. He also said that George does not make him excited as a Celtics fan (albeit in more explicit verbiage).
"Finals MVP, great player for the Celtics, always played hard, I'm not crying that we're going to trade him and lose him," Portnoy said. "We were broken, something had to go."
This trade happened after a deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo allegedly fell through, and he was sent to the Miami Heat on Monday.
Celtics fans are split on the trade right now, with some saying that statistically Celtics actually did better when Brown was off the court than he was on, and others calling for Stevens' termination.
"He just traded Jaylen Brown, who is under contract for 3 more years and was 6th in MVP voting, for Paul George and 2 firsts," one Reddit user on r/bostonceltics said. "Fire Brad Stevens."
A Celtics fan on Facebook under a Celtics Nation post said that this was worse than when Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers.
"Anyone who thought the Celtics weren’t planning on dealing Brown weren’t paying attention," another Facebook fan said. "He deserves to be on a team where he’s the star."
