One of the greatest point guards to ever play the game was gushing about Tyrese Haliburton's performance in the Pacers' Game 5 closeout win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night.
Haliburton scored 31 points, had eight assists and six rebounds and his 3-point barrage in the second quarter helped the Pacers erase a 19-point deficit.
Afterward, on NBA TV's "NBA GameTime," former IU star and Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas (also a former Pacers coach) said Haliburton's game reminded him of another Indiana point guard: Caitlin Clark.
‘His intellect for the game is on another level," Thomas said of the Pacers star. "At the start of the game, when he walked in, I said, ‘He’s walking in like Caitlin Clark.’ Right? Now, real talk, right? The way he played the game tonight, this is a Caitlin Clark-type of game — spreading the floor, right? He knocked down the 3, he kept the pace, and not only did he keep the pace, he controlled the tempo, he got everybody involved... he had the floor spread out, you know, he’s shooting it from way, way, way, way, way, way, way, waaaay out there…
"I say this in all sincerity. We all steal a little from each other when we play against each other, when we watch somebody play, right? … I think Haliburton watching Caitlin, and their relationship, you know being fans of each other, I see a lot of her game in his game, right now.”
Despite attending rival schools (Clark from Iowa and Haliburton from Iowa State), the two stars have developed an early bond and are quick to cheer and congratulate one another's success.
“I’ve said it many times: Caitlin is amazing. For me, getting to actually spend time around her, be around her, get to know her personally, she's just an amazing person, an amazing player," Haliburton said in January while the Pacers were in Paris.
“She's become a good friend of mine over the past year and anything that I can do to help, I will, but I don't think she necessarily needs my help. I mean, she's amazing. That group is amazing. And to see what they're doing for women's basketball as a whole has been really cool. And she’s spearheading that.
“So I'm just glad to be a part of the journey and watch what she does. I feel like I have a front row seat with her being in our backyard."
