Continuing in our series of " 3 unanswered questions." Welcome to the NFC South division and the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are projected to finish tied for first in the division this season, but as many Atlanta fans know all too well, these high expectations are rarely met. Like the old saying, "there's always next year," this doesn't apply to this fan base. They are impatient and want, at the very least, to make a playoff appearance for the first time in almost a decade, after eight losing seasons. The past few seasons have resulted in eight wins or fewer, and it just isn't good enough.
What could be under the microscope in Flowery Branch, GA, when training camp starts, and the Georgia sun sets you full blaze even in the shade? Let's take a look.
Who will be WR2 opposite Drake London? Jahan Dotson? Rookie Zachariah Branch? It appears that Branch will receive several targets, but Dotson may be the leading candidate. He has averaged 12.6 yards per catch in 42 starts and has had 7 touchdowns as a rookie in 2022. That doesn't mean much now, but it's something I suppose. Atlanta may need to take a look at finding one more wide receiver who is ready to contribute immediately.
Gaining size on the defensive front has remained an objective for the Falcons during the offseason. They have to improve up front to complement everyone else on that side of the ball. The defense was much improved last season and needs to continue the upward trend. Young guys will need to develop quickly. They are already more athletic, but camp should start to narrow the gap of who plays.
Zachariah Branch could be an underrated weapon in the slot. He can manufacture the ball for himself on offense by running bubble screens and reverse plays. Aside from that, his route tree will need tweaking, but he is only a rookie and should get better as the season goes on. How much of the ball he will get remains to be seen.
