The Los Angeles Rams are welcoming back reigning MVP Matthew Stafford to lead their offense in 2026. Stafford, who has joined NFL legends as an MVP winner last season, will have a plethora of gunslingers and playmakers around the league battling him to win the award this year.
With that being said, Stafford remains a favorite to repeat. Here are three reasons why Stafford is in prime position to retain his award.
The last time a player won back-to-back MVP awards was in 2020 and 2021, when Aaron Rodgers did so with the Green Bay Packers. Rodgers' situation back then draws several erie similarities. Both were in a McVay-type offense, had Davante Adams and lost in the NFC Championship Game. Additionally, both teams drafted their successors in the first round and both quarterbacks led the league in passing touchdowns. It's a mirror of one another.
The Packers used the 29th pick following Rodgers' 2020 season to select cornerback Eric Stokes. The Rams used their 29th pick to trade for cornerback Trent McDuffie.
While Adams is an older player, he continues to prove that class is permanent, as he had a career revelation that likely secured him as a Hall of Famer. Adams is the only player in NFL history to be the league leader in receiving touchdowns for three different franchises. His play remains timeless and the natural advantages he creates allow the Rams to utilize Puka Nacua and their 13 personnel offense to devastating effects.
Entering Year 2 in L.A., Adams and the Rams have a deeper understanding of each other. Adams proved that his injury to end the regular season would not limit him, as his heroic efforts in the playoffs did not go unnoticed. Adams remains the Rams' No. 1 red zone option entering 2026.
Looking at recent MVP winners, all of them have been quarterbacks who have had consistency on their offensive line. Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen are recent examples, but the list goes on and on. The Rams have all five starting offensive linemen returning, while adding Keagen Trost as a depth piece. Justin Dedich remains a good backup, while Beaux Limmer's ability to run block could help the team in a pinch.
The Rams kept Stafford clean all season long in 2025. The linemen know each other, trust each other, and Stafford has the trust in them to keep pushing the football downfield.
