Aaron Rodgers has yet to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers — and although signs point to the signing being a matter of when, not if, what if the four-time MVP ultimately decides to retire? GM Omar Khan made it clear that four quarterbacks would be on the roster heading into training camp — leaving one more spot available alongside Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and 2025 sixth-round QB Will Howard.
If Rodgers misses out on his opportunity to play for the Steel City — or decides to hang it up after a disappointing 2024 season — here are three veteran QBs the Steelers should target.
Ryan Tannehill hasn't been on an NFL roster since 2023 — but he still remains one of the best free agent QBs available today. At best, the former Titans signal-caller could push Mason Rudolph for the starting job — and at worst, he'd be a fantastic backup who could even mentor sixth-round QB Will Howard.
Carson Wentz's career has been characterized by the highest of highs — and the lowest of lows. The former Eagles QB seemed like a lock to become the 2017 MVP before tearing his ACL in Week 14 — and was forced to watch his backup, Nick Foles, lead Philadelphia to the team’s first Super Bowl. Wentz has found himself in a backup role over the past several seasons — but the Steelers could be his shot back into a starting role in 2025.
Kirk Cousins would be the ideal backup plan if the Rodgers deal falls flat — but there's a catch. The Steelers would likely need to take on at least $20 million of his guaranteed money. It would be a win-win for both Cousins and the Steelers, should Pittsburgh take on the financial challenge — as the former Vikings QB could revitalize his career in the Steel City, and the Steelers would get a short-term quarterback to stay competitive in 2025.
